Instructional Model
All students in “for credit” classes will take a pre-assessment on the first day of class. The results of this assessment will guide the teaching and learning process. Students will be required to maintain a Portfolio of Student Work that shows evidence of mastery of identified course objectives. All students will also receive study skills instruction. Assignments are to be completed as assigned. Daily tutorial sessions will be available from 10:00 to 10:15 AM.
Students who wish to study new material and get a “head start” on the next school year are welcome to register!
Course Availability
Classes with insufficient enrollment or teacher unavailability may not be offered. Enrollment will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Tuition will not be refunded after the first day of classes.
Attendance and Punctuality
The only absences allowed during Summer School are those that are excused (documentation from doctor or court required). No grades will be issued if a student has unexcused absences. Time missed because of excused absences must be made up at a time determined by the Director; additional payment may be required at the rate of $24.00 per hour. Students are expected to report to class on time; students who report more than fifteen minutes after the start of class will be marked absent. All occasions of tardiness must be made up during intersession on the day of the tardy. A disciplinary referral will be generated after three tardies.
Textbooks
All textbooks loaned to students must be covered, properly cared for, and returned at the conclusion of Summer School. Grades will not be issued until all materials have been returned.
Transportation
Transportation is the responsibility of parents and students. Students who plan to drive must complete a “Request for Driving Privilege” form and follow all parking guidelines. No parking pass fees are required. Students may park on the south side of the Career & Tech Center, in the lot facing the softball field. Parking privileges will be revoked as a result of failure to display a parking permit, reckless driving, or improper use of vehicle.
Student Conduct
Students will respect the right of all Summer School participants to learn. All rules of conduct, dress, etc. that apply during the regular school year will also apply during Summer School. A disciplinary referral will be generated for any student who chooses to violate school rules. Parents will be notified by mail of each written infraction. Students will be dismissed from specific Summer School classes following the third written infraction in that class. No grades or refund will be issued.
Students should give their attention to the following specific guidelines:
- Smoking is not allowed on school property.
- Eating and drinking is only allowed during the “break” and only in the designated area (water bottles are allowed in class).
- Students are not allowed to leave campus or return to cars unless leaving for the day.
- Students are to remain in designated areas only. Loitering and wandering are not allowed.
- Appropriate language must be used at all times.
- Respect must be shown for school property.
Grading and Credit
Teachers will issue a progress report at the course mid-point. A final grade will be issued to the appropriate school at the conclusion of Summer School. A copy of the final grade report will be mailed to the student’s home. Final Summer School grades will be determined according to an assessment of the Portfolio of Student Work (80%) and the Summer School course final examination (20%). For Chariho Regional High School students, final course grades will be computed by averaging twice the semester grade achieved and the summer school grade. Credit may not be earned for a Summer School course unless that course was taken during the regular school year. Chariho Regional High School students who fail to earn credit during the regular school year because of excessive absence or because of a school year grade of below 50 will not be allowed to earn Chariho Regional High School course credit by taking Summer School courses. Chariho Regional High School students must attend Chariho Summer School to earn course credit. For students taking two half credits of the same course, only one Summer School final grade will be issued. That final grade will be averaged with each of the semester grades.
